Dog-friendly hiking trails in the South Peninsula
We walk these trails every week with our own Labs and our boarding guests. This is the honest short-list — from flat coastal boardwalks for puppies to full-day sandstone climbs for fit adult dogs — with leash rules, water and breed notes for each.
The trails
Elephant's Eye Cave
Silvermine (Tokai gate)
Difficulty — Moderate · 5km round trip · 2 hours
Leash — On-lead in the reserve; SANParks activity permit required.
Water — None on trail — carry at least 1L per dog in summer.
A steady climb with panoramic views over Noordhoek and Hout Bay. The cave itself is a shady turnaround point.
Local tip — Best before 9am in summer. Not ideal for short-nosed breeds on hot days — the exposed ridge gets fierce.
Silvermine Reservoir Loop
Silvermine (Ou Kaapse Weg gate)
Difficulty — Easy · 3km flat loop · 45–60 min
Leash — On-lead; SANParks permit required.
Water — The reservoir itself — dogs can swim from the far bank.
Boardwalks, fynbos and a swim stop. The easiest introduction to Silvermine for puppies and senior dogs.
Local tip — Weekdays are dramatically quieter. Rinse salty/dirty coats before pick-up if you're on the way home.
Slangkop Lighthouse Coastal Path
Kommetjie
Difficulty — Easy · 4km out-and-back · 1 hour
Leash — Off-lead permitted where signed; keep close near the tidal pools.
Water — Bring your own — the coast is exposed and salty.
Flat coastal boardwalk right beneath Slangkop lighthouse. Ocean on one side, fynbos on the other.
Local tip — Our go-to for reactive dogs — wide sightlines mean you can spot other walkers early and step aside.
Kalk Bay Peak via Echo Valley
Kalk Bay
Difficulty — Hard · 8km loop · 3–4 hours
Leash — On-lead in the reserve; fit dogs only.
Water — One small stream in Echo Valley in winter — otherwise carry.
Sandstone caves, ladders and 360° views. A proper adventure for a fit adult dog.
Local tip — Skip the ladder sections with anxious or heavy dogs. Take the Weary Willy path down instead of the boulders.
Chapman's Peak Lower Contour
Noordhoek
Difficulty — Easy–Moderate · 6km out-and-back · 1.5 hours
Leash — On-lead; watch for cyclists and baboons.
Water — None reliable — carry.
A gentle contour with jaw-dropping views straight down onto Noordhoek beach.
Local tip — Start from the Noordhoek end for shade in the morning. Avoid on baboon-active days — check the local WhatsApp groups.
Noordhoek Long Beach
Noordhoek / Kommetjie end
Difficulty — Easy · as long as you like
Leash — Off-lead outside marked swimming zones with reliable recall.
Water — None — carry, especially in summer.
The classic South Peninsula dog beach. 8km of hard sand — a Labrador's happy place.
Local tip — Enter from the Kommetjie end for fewer horses and easier parking. Rinse paws afterwards to avoid salt-itch.
Trail etiquette in Cape Town
- Carry a My Green Card if you'll set foot in a SANParks-managed reserve — rangers do check.
- Recall your dog around horses, cyclists and baboons. A single bark at a baboon troop can escalate fast.
- Bag every poop, even far from the trail head. Fynbos soils are nutrient-poor and dog waste changes them.
- Turn back early on hot summer days — Peninsula rock heats to over 50°C on exposed slopes.
